John sounds like you've encountered Smerinthus Cerisyi (Willow Sphinx).  A
crepuscular creature, They are attracted to the sweet smell of the hive.  A
moth that is often mistaken for the Hummingbird.  I observe a more southern
species often in the late evening feeding on star jasmine. Look for sweet
smelling blooms late in the evening.
