> *certified Master beekeepers*

What is it with this "Master" thing. Maybe I've missed it, but it never
seems to get so easily hung on other lines of endeavor as it does with
beekeeping. We've had two courses here in western Canada with this
prestigious title. One was in British Columbia (which may still exist) that
ran for a week in the spring and the other was here in Alberta. That one had
two days of classroom and then correspondence work over the remainder of the
season. The program here was directed at those just starting out or with
limited experience. The BC program had perhaps slightly higher expectations
of its students. Obviously the Missouri situation is/was not much different
and I seem to recall seeing advertisements or hearing about like programs
elsewhere all using the word "Master".

Plumbers, electrians, carpenters, etc here, all have to pass a journeyman
program involving several years in their trade before moving up and
challenging the Master level exams. Of those who do try, I'm told it is not
easy. The name must come from some administrator in charge of selling the
course, who closest contact with a hive was passing by on the highway at
sixty miles an hour. I've been making a good living with bees for over a
quarter century (played with them even longer), but not sure I'd really feel
comfortable calling myself a "Master Beekeeper".
