"I don't like dry sugar because it's messy and the bees have to get on top
of it."

I put the dry sugar on now, usually on top of a single sheet of newspaper with a spacer rim and condensation will turn it into a "sugar brick" in short order.  It absorbs some of the excess moisture plus provides emergency feed.  The bees will feed from the bottom of the "brick" and virtually none falls through to the bottom.
