In UK, Western red cedar is generally considered as the 'best' material 
to make hives from, it is light yet strong and if left totally untreated 
it will last 60 or 70 years, if treated with raw linseed oil it is 
estimated that it will last upwards of 200 years.

I have not seen any cedar frames marketed commercially in UK for at 
least thirty years, although I have seen cedar frame parts sold as 
'seconds' up to about fifteen years ago.

As to soft streaks, I have noticed this in yellow cedar, but it is 
encumbant on the timber converter to work around these.
