Lab study results can definitely indicate the possibility of a problem.  What needs to be done then is replication of the study and accompanying multiple field studies focusing on the problem, a long and time consuming process to be sure.  But, lab results do not form a cut in stone declaration of a problem.  It just says, here is a perceived problem that needs more study in real world situations to determine its relavance.
