why were they not laying?? thats the question?  swarmed out and failed requeens?(weather related)  queen stalled from no forage???
The part that strikes me as Non scientist,  is the attempt to collect data from a complex super orginism on a tiny scale.  Any serious beekeeper will tell you the variations in growth, surviving and production in haves is highly varble location to location, season to season,  hive to hive.
It seems to me this research in general is like sampeling humans for cancer.   Long term meta data seems to be the best and IMO the onlyh real acurate methods that should be applied.
Seems crazy to try to figure out policy for pesticides that help feed the world based on a few hives spread out over a 3 countries with completly different forage bases and weather.
