We've had marked queens retain marking for years.  Clearly it depends some on paint used.  But as far as wearing off or grooming off, that's usually an obvious process as the dot gets irregular, smaller, etc.  

We've used lots of markings, tags, wing clipping.  My own bias - queen supercedure is far more common than most think.
