What has worked for me:

1)As soon as you remove the last honey super after the fall flow provide
some feed.
2)Feed 4-6 gallons of 2:1 syrup in a couple of steps a couple of weeks
apart - if you try to feed all at once, the colonies with a lot of brood
will be light.  Barrel feeding works well if you don't have many
neighbouring colonies.
3)Target a weight without the top cover of 80+lbs
4)Wrap and reduce the entrance - the black coroplas wraps in the linked
video are great because they are easy to re and re in the spring and store
flat
