Phrases such as in the dark or the hive, or the dark of winter, etc. have been used here to describe when brood rearing starts.

How about beekeepers already feeding colonies with pollen patties as early as March in Alberta to stimulate egg laying and early start. However outdoors non fed bees could start late March at a slower rate. I  have even beekeepers do feed bees in doors with pollen patties to stimulate starting brooding. It is hard task but it is done. So it seems the issue here should differentiate between bee management practices done by beekeepers and natural forces involved in stimulating egg laying  and brooding.
