I didn't do any testing.  It was based on your article about realizing you had been doing it counter to manufacturers suggestion (when you were placing in between brood chambers)- and this study where they say 
'There was therefore an inverse change between the volume of air and the variability of efficacy'.

Bit of an assumption on my part that this would translate into less efficacy in between brood boxes (since its lower volume of air).
The anecdotal part of my reasoning is that the first year that I did the August Apiguard treatment with 2"  spacer rims was my best year for both number and size of colonies making it to almonds.
