Though certainly not my idea, using individual markers on every hive is one
answer.  Simply put, painting a different design on each landing board, say
stripes, arrows, stars, etc., and using different colors helps to identify
each hive.  As much as we admire the orienting ability of such a small
insect, they are not infallable, with some species being better or worse
than others at navigating.  This does seem to help, especially in a yard
with hive after hive all the same color and shape.
