A previous writer described having hives on metal roofing seemed to prevent
SHB while other regional hives were infested.  - giving credence also to
another possible deterrent of covering the ground with plastic &/or treated
plywood in a wide perimeter around hives at risk.

 

Humidity does encourage SHB as I count beeyards most bothered by them.
Higher humidity may encourage other pests as well, Nosema?
