See attached pictures (Thymovar strip). Sometimes the yellow substrate is chewed away and all what stays is a small white grid that carries the substrate.
However, the colonies don't all behave in the same way.
When one put the Thymovar strip between two excluders, the bees don't touch the strip (last picture).
