My practice is to add a small shim in mid March to give space for protein patties. If the shim doesn't fit well I can get snow on the top bars. It is not helpful but not deadly. I have a top entrance on the south side and if I have a crack on the north side I will get a draft. It takes a strong, well fed hive to survive a draft if it is open all winter. I would differentiate between passive ventilation and cross ventilation (drafts).
