Randy, In central NC we have a early fast honey flow. When I ran 1 and
1/2 hives I always used an excluder to keep brood out of the first super.
The 1 and 1/2 was tight so the queen would go up in to the honey supers
frequently. I switched to 2 deeps 7-8 years ago and find I don't need an
excluder now. 2 deeps seems to be enough room, with some exceptions, and I
find that if I use an excluder on a 2 deep hive the bees frequently pack
the second deep with honey and ignore the medium honey supers above the
excluder. I keep my excluders and slip one in between the brood chambers
when removing honey so I can find the queen quicker as I requeen over the
summer.
