We enjoy such swarms with a bit of grated cheese and a good sprinkling of

Aaron, why are you ruling that out?  That would appear to me to be the most
likely explanation.  Either the rest of the swarm took off with a virgin,
or returned to the colony to wait for a virgin to emerge.
