If you remove the full box from the hive and pry away
as much propolis, top and bottom of each frame, then
try turning the box on its side (after its removal from
the hive) and try tapping the first frame that you wish to
loosen. Start at one ond and work your way towards the
other end.
 
This technique has worked for me when the top of
the frame started to give way as you described it.
 
Hopefully the above explanation is written in an easy
to understand manner.
