losses that any significant move entails for the bees. 
 
I agree.  Move them less than 3 miles and many old fliers return to the
original site; move them more than 3 miles and many old fliers fly out and
get lost.  Whether the loss of old fliers has any real impact on the colony
is perhaps a moot point; might even improve the health of the colony.
