bee swarms returning to the hive

I am a new beekeeper and my bees swarmed into a near by oak tree this morning, they were in the tree for about 45 minutes
and then they came back to the hive. I couldnt find the old queen in the hive, but I could have missed her. Did she die in
flight and the workers had to come back?  Is this common?
