Mr Dick I see a nice picture on your "A Beekeeper's Diary".  
It is a beautiful winter picture of hives consisting of mostly 3 and 4 
brood supers with open wholes in them.  Are those holes for ventilation?
Do you always keep them open?  Do you ever close them?
