Aaron;

Randy is right that I like the 'Amrine' flash boards because I can control
the dose of formic and it is a fast 'flash' treatment. He is also correct
that the trick is to get the vapor concentration to the proper level in the
hive. If I were facing your friend's situation with large hives I would
split them temporarily down to 2 deeps and then treat with formic. Use
solid bottoms and make sure the hives are tight. Also avoid very hot
weather. Once I began using formic I switched back to solid bottoms and
had to get rid of all of my old worn out brood chambers with open corners.

good luck!
