Apparently DEET has a similar effect.  Spraying Deep Woods Off around in the 
air when bees are difficult works quite well.   Don't spray it on the hive, 
obviously.

Personally, I don't use DWO, though.   When necessary, I just take the 
smoker and generate a huge cloud around myself by pointing it upwind and 
puffing madly in all directions.  That usually gets rid of the cloud of bees 
trying to sting.

Usually a little judicious smoker use and deft handling of the hives 
prevents any such episodes, but sometimes, especially when working near 
clumsy people wearing tight veils and gloves, this becomes necessary.
