When Smith says this, "Inbreeding (the mating between closely related individuals) often has detrimental effects that are associated with loss of heterozygosity at overdominant loci, and the expression of deleterious recessive alleles," you know you are dealing with an author who does not understand inbreeding so can likely be ignored.

Yes, inbreeding often has detrimental effects.  Someday we may even understand why.  But, clearly the reasons for such effects given by Smith are mostly fiction.
