Wouldn't  be surprised if bees react differently to different sources.  



I sometimes add plant material to my smoker to make it smell more pleasant; 
 a favourite is Pineapple Mayweed. Once, however, I used sage and the bees 
poured  out of the hive and attacked the smoker!
