Re:  "Are you supposed to mix 20 pounds sugar with 10 pounds water?  I have always mixed 2 gallons of sugar with 1 gallon of water."


Distinction without a difference.  The effective density of dry granulated sugar is within a few percent of the density of water.  2:1 by volume is essentially identical to 2:1 by weight in this situation.
