  There is not a lot of time between the inactivity of a colony in winter and
swarm season.  Perhaps you have found a colony that has not been exposed to
mites or collapsed from them.  However the odds also favor a colony which died
and was reinhabited by a swarm in springtime.  If you have ever seen a swarm
take to a new home you know you could miss it's occurrence in the space of a
coffee break.
