Sorry to keep you waiting, Bill. I was discussing that question yesterday
with my visitors. I would now like to run cage trials to see if N ceranae
is a necessary component in initiating the virus-induced collapses. I
would not be at all surprised. I can tell you that the dead adult bees at
the entrances during the initial wave of collapses were full of N ceranae.

I will be doing further analysis on nosema in the yards, as I have been
taking samples.

Please note that the colonies in that yard had been thriving for quite a
while prior to the initiation of the experiment with N ceranae present. One
change was the introduction of new queen stock (all sister queens), but the
colonies had been building well prior to inoculation.

We didn't see any sign of problems in the yard until we did the virus
inoculation, then collapses began shortly after.

I by no means consider this to be a definitive trial, but only one small
thought-provoking experiment. I will be eager to see the results of the
concurrent sister trials in Florida and Europe.

I am offering these updates simply for the benefit of informed discussion.

Randy Oliver
