"Does anyone know if it used to be common practice to feed salt to bees?"

At least some still do in the UK as I have twice been advised to 
sprinkle salt onto the top of my frames although  I have never tried 
it.  I do, however, keep a permanent salt lick next to my home apiary 
for my few sheep but have never seen a bee on it.
