Having watched this thread for some time, I wonder if there are others who
use rolled up corrugated cardboard.  It is certainly in plentiful supply and
--when coiled to the proper density--it burns for long time.  The duration
of the burn can be increased is a handful of grass or weeds is placed
on top of the cardboard.
 
I learned this technique from the late Bill Steven.
