Certainly makes me want to stay away from organic meat."

I'm pretty sure this was meant in terms of husbandry. If they don't make the cut they get culled and go to market. Without medication and taken out of the breeding end of an operaton.
As far as I know I think some queen breeding operations use drones that are medicated/treated allowing some of the undesirables to mate.
This would seem to be an area in bee husbandry to look at.
