This is a good example of the contradictory information we receive regarding winter protection. 

One person says insulate heavily to avoid changes in temperature, while another says expose them to sun to encourage changes in temperature. Go figure! 

[ I think it depends more on the actual winter conditions, how the bees will do. Some years better insulated hives will excel, other years hives exposed to temperature changes will do better. ]
