...but remember the language that is being used, and the technology.  Large cells, in this case are drone cells (drawn without foundation), and small cells are worker cells (drawn without foundation).  This is not the large (5.4mm) and small (4.9mm) cell size we talk about today.  Foundation had not been invented, and therefore couldn't be stretched to make smaller increments than worker/drone.

According to Dewey Caron (in his Observation Hive book from A.I.Root), Huber's bees were smaller than the bees "we have today".
