The local veggie farmers tell me that there is a small (tick size) scorpion type bug living in the top 3" of the soil locally, (Southeast New England by the Sea).  It has been known to bite gardeners on occasion causing no serious damage.   Is this the same beast you all are talking about that likes to east varoa mites?  Obviously I am no Entomologist and would not know the name of the local insect except that it looks like the fellow in the photographs.
