As Trevor said we do not use repellents anymore in Australia.  

But we did use either benzaldehyde(sp?) or carbolic.  Carbolic was slower
and needed black metal tops and warm days so as to vaporize.  Normally a
larger number of boards were used for this reason.  Benzaldehyde was much
faster but bees were quick to come back up if left on for longer than a few
minutes.

I take it that you have room for the bees to move to, such as under
supering?
