We know of the patent held by USDA Tucson. Vita had been working with Gloria DeGrandi Hoffman several years ago, and we funded a CRADA agreement under this patent. Together with Gloria, we had been looking at trying to use 2-heptanone as a repellent for wax moth. Unfortunately, we could not at that time find a dose or delivery system that would be consistent. The collaboration with USDA Tucson continues but we're not there yet with a method for wax moth control, using this substance.

Our research at the University of Thessaloniki went in a different direction when we were studying the behaviour of bees and we wanted to know what exactly the bees did with 2-heptanone, rather than how it might be used as a control substance. We were very surprised with our discovery, so a lot of data was collected to confirm that this is what 2-heptanone is used for. 

Please note, we are not at all making any claims for commercial use of 2-heptanone as a potential control agent for Varroa or for wax moth. That was not the object of our study in Greece. The USDA patent clearly covers this.
