Hi Bob and all

Mendes doesn't top feed as you suggest but uses 20 or so 3.5 gal
pails in a feed station some distance from his holding yard.  As far
as barrel feeding to support Jerry's point -
Barrel feeding is similar to everyone getting paid by a dumptruck
depositing its load of cash in the middle of a Walmart parking lot
and everyone diving in for their share.
