Being able to spot your equipment at a glance also comes to mind as theft is a reality these days,

What do others do make their hives identifiable if stolen?

Long espoused has been the concept of embedding readable chips into the equipment, be it hive wooden ware or the top bars of frames.  These are chips that can be activated and read at a distance.  Commercial beekeepers would be able to afford this.  The small beekeepers would be able to do so only if they were in a club or cooperative.  The chips are cheap, it's the reader that is expensive.  It seems to me that if the chips were embedded in the frames, it would be a lot more expensive in time/labor to remove them than to get new equipment (IMHO).   I would like to see the beekeeping community go this route.  The more of this equipment we buy, the cheaper it becomes.
