Pete's right on,  If you know what your doing on timing,  there is no real downside to splits, be they nucs or packages.  In fact most hives respond better when such an event is done.   

Any serious honey producer will tell you restarting a hive via this method is the key to better honey production.   Hives that are in "emergency mode" (for lack of a real term) will gather and store and raise brood to their maximum ability. 

Hives that are not needing growth become what I would call complacent,  with their size and actually slow down and stall brood production.
