Hi Bob

Speaking from my small-time tinkerer perspective, I found them useful for emergency feed in warmer weather than we have now (and before I invested a few pounds in proper bucket feeders). My zip-locs were much below a gallon in capacity, but here goes:

- only half-fill them as they will spill if under tension
- lay them sealed on the top bars
- with a razor blade, cut through the plastic in a few long cuts on the upper side

I suppose that a bit of dribbling might alert the bees to the reserves above them, but for me if you can access candy/fondant that would be safer at this time of year.

best wishes

Gavin
