This winter I am using 2" blueboards cut to fit inside the outer covers and
above the inner covers - again.  Just put them on yesterday afternoon.  I
was reminded as I looked at the ones previously used that the bees like to
chew on them.  After a winter you get an indentation chewed out that might
be 1/8" to 3/8" deep with the edges of the indentation going out towards one
or more sides of the blueboard.  I guess they are trying to chew a
passageway to the outside world.  Why would they bother with chewing the
blueboard when they could just walk right out the hole in the inner cover?
Maybe they want more ventilation?

  

For top ventilation I position the vent in the inner cover down and forward.

 

If I had one inch blueboard I would prefer it because the outer cover would
overlap some of the upper hive box.  With 2" there is no overlap.
