Does the kit detect Bacillus alvei or only Melissococcus pluton?  I ask this 
as what Gavin has shown in photos is what we see for Bacillus alvei.  Also 
smell is a very poor way to detect EFB.  If it has a smell then it is at a 
very developed stage.  EFB should be able to be picked up with the uncapped 
brood being a yellowy colour.  You should be able pick it up with a few 
cells.  Of course we do not have PMS to confuse the issue.
