When I was an inspector I was told (by others more senior than me) that the
best way was to put several sheets of newspaper in the entrance to absorb
liquid and to then pour in a cup of gasoline from the top.  Was told death
was instantaneous.  Of course, this could only be done on a rainy day or at
night.

Have never tried it, and (hopefully) never will.  Never felt a need to kill
a colony.
