That about says it all.  

We did try his various methods, including his special divider board with 
the opening and closing entrances all around, but found that far too 
complex.

We either just did quick splits as described earlier onto floors or onto 
inner covers or just sheets of 10 mil black plastic placed on top of the 
parent hive. (We have an auger hole in each brood box, so no 
entrance slot or shim is required.
