As usual, reporter isn't quite clear when it comes to bees and beekeeping.

Tony lost 25 dbl deep hives in one yard (not just 25,000 bees--pics look like he has at least that many bodies in the hives and on the ground), so $5000 is a fair estimate. He is an experienced beekeeper, typically runs 100+ hives, past county inspector, Ohio State Beekeepers Ass'n (OSBA) board member, bee package seller, teaches beekeeping classes at many levels.  He was part of the original OSBA "Ohio Queen Project" using AI breeder queens.  The yard he lost was his continuation of the queen breeding project, all hand picked breeder stock selected over the past 7 years.
Ohio law states that farmers are to notify beekeepers 24-hours in advance of spraying.  Of course, there is no mechanism in place for the farmer to find out who is keeping bees or where they keep them, so this notification is a bit difficult. The story is generating quite a bit of local media chatter, so hopefully will at least raise awareness in some of the public.
