I've tried everything Mike has tried with little success. I can vouch for the spray back with a pressure washer. A hot water pressure washer may work, but not the cold water ones.

I've tried lye, also with no real success.

What may work is to remove as much as possible, then recoat with wax. I'm trying that now to see how they like it.
