I sometimes wonder whether the sheer number and range of variables make it almost impossible to draw any conclusions from a statistics-based survey.

I know that we all like to analyse problems using data based on hard numbers - it seems logical to do so, but could it be that sometimes a gut feeling may produce a more useful result?
