At the end of a session in the yard, I dump most of the fuel out and then
pump the bellows like mad until the tar & whatnot catches fire.  Then I put
my hivetool in the pot and burn that sucker clean.  Then, using my handy
Leatherman, I use the pliers to trade ends and fire up the other end.
Once torched, both the hive tool and smoker are clean as clean as a whistle.

PS - I haven't had as much success with this technique when using Liquid
Smoke...
