There have been several articles published on this and similar phenomenon
as well as spoofing of journals where totally off the wall papers were
submitted, peer reviewed, and published.

Also, one drug company decided to look back on 50 papers that seemed to be
promising and worthy of investment. Six months later they found that only 6
actually reflected reality and could be duplicated. The problem is that the
44 bad papers entered the research stream and are now quoted in other
papers, even though they have zero merit.

Sounds familiar.
