I tried this method back when we first got varroa, but found no correlation
between paper shredding behavior and varroa resistance.

I used the frozen brood square method for a number of years with great
success.  It is very easy to breed for bees with high resistance to AFB.
Unfortunately, such behavior is not an indicator for resistance to varroa.
On the other hand, varroa-resistant bees tend to exhibit good hygienic
behavior.
