I always favored Waller's (1980) modified OAC trap.
The addition of a trash trap and a ventilated pollen tray also help.

On searching, I found these links, although not to his original paper.
At the Tucson BeeLab, we commonly caught many pounds each year,
and Waller's tests on the wisdom of full-time trapping showed no damage
to colonies.

(This last one is probably the best description I found today - links to
a good set of plans)
